When you are tossing two coins simultaneously, there are 4 outcomes you can have:

  1. Heads, Heads
  2. Tails, Tails
  3. Heads, Tails
  4. Tails, Heads

If both 1 and 2 matter to you, then the probability of Outcome 3 (Coin 1 has Heads and Coin 2 has tails) out of total 4 outcomes is: 1/4

If only 2 matters to you and 1 does not matter, then you are okay with any of Outcome 3 or Outcome 4 = you are fine with 2 outcomes out of 4. Hence, probability is 2/4 = 1/2.
