The resultant force will be 2 N as(5-3 = 2).

In your question you have asked that two forces (5 N and 3 N) are acting at opposite directions.

  • So, when Force act at opposite direction, we need to Subtract both the number.

To understand it let's take a one example :

  • Deepak Pushes box a heavy Box with a force of 50 N and and prashant applies 40 N and of the force in the opposite direction. The resultant force is 50 N - 40 N = 10 N. The box will move in the direction in which Deepak is pushing.

So, we conclude that when two unequal forces act in opposite direction on an object the resultant force is found to be the difference between the two forces. It moves to be the direction of the larger forces.

Have you ever seen the game of tug of war ?

In that game two teams pull a rope in opposite direction. Members of both the teams try to pull the rope in their own direction sometimes the rock simply does not move this is when the both teams pull the rope in their own direction with equal force. The team that pulls hard, apply a larger force finally wins the game. That forces are said to be an Unbalanced force. The unbalanced force can move an object at rest, bring the moving object at rest, and change the direction of the motion of the moving object.

Extra knowledge :

  1. The total force applied is called resultant force.
  2. The resultant force is also called Net force.

Some information about Force :

  1. The push or a pull on any object is called force.
  2. Force are of two types.
  3. Contact and Non - Contact Force.
  4. Contact forces are the forces which act only when objects are in physical contact with each other and bring out changes.
  5. Non - Contact forces are the forces which act when objects are not in physical contact with each other.
