The smaller number is 30.

GIVEN

If two numbers are in the ratio 5:3. if 10 is reduced to both of the numbers then the ratio becomes 2:1.

TO FIND

The smallest number.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

It is Given,

Ratio of numbers = 5:3

Let the first number = 5x

Let the second number = 3x

Now,

10 is reduced from both the numbers;

First number = 5x-10

Second number = 3x-10

New ratio = 2:1

So,

 \frac{5x - 10}{3x - 10}  =  \frac{2}{1}

Solving the above equation,

5x-10 = 2(3x-10)

5x-10 = 6x-20

Solving for x

-10+20 = 6x-5x

10 = x

First number = 5 × 10 = 50

Second number = 3x = 3×10 = 30

Hence, The smaller number is 30.
