let the 1st unknown number be x and the 2nd unknown number be y.

here x + y= 40

and x - y =10

x + y - (x - y)= 40 - 10

x - x + y + y = 30

2y = 30

y = 30/2

y = 15

so x = 40 - 15 = 25

      or

x = 15 + 10 =25

there fore ,

x = 25 and y = 10 whose sum is 40 and difference is 10.

hope it helps !!
