Some river water may look clear and drinkable, but it is likely to contain harmful organisms coming from one or more sources, e.g., treated sewage effluent (sewage treatment does not aim to produce drinking water but water that can be discharged to a river without upsetting the balance of aquatic life), industrial or agricultural processes, animals standing in the river and defecating, animal corpses, and so on. None of these necessarily produces visible evidence of its presence, and the organisms that could either kill you or make you very ill indeed are microscopic.
