We would fall in the below layer of the land as the layer of land is too thick and it can't be totally destroyed off.

Well, generally, people may get stuck inside the crack but never land anywhere cause they're stuck. The cracks caused by any earthquake are not deep enough to make an individual actually fall inside. If you fall inside a crack, you are most likely to climb up by yourselves without any major injury.
