Given :- if water is pumped into a 36-gallon pool at pipe R and out of the pool at pipe S. If the rate of pumping through R is 3 gallons per hour, how many gallons per hour must be pumped out at pipe S so that it takes 48 hours for the pool to be filled to capacity ?

Solution :-

from given data we have,

  • Rate of pipe R = 3 gallons per hour.
  • Rate of pipe S = Let x gallons per hour.
  • Capacity of pool = 36 gallon.
  • Total time = 48 hours .

So,

→ 3 * 48 - x * 48 = 36

→ 48(3 - x) = 36

→ 3 - x = (36/48)

→ 3 - x = (3/4)

→ x = 3 - (3/4)

→ x = (9/4) gallons per hour. (Ans.)

Hence, water must be pumped out of the pool at the rate of (9/4) gallons per hour.
