In H2O, the most stable "place" for a lone H+ is to bond with H2O forming a hydronium (H3O+) ion. H3O+ is not as stable as H2O of course, but it's way more stable than a naked proton (H+), so the process of forming a hydronium ion is virtually instantaneous.
