H2O gas is a molecule as there is definite bond between hydrogen and oxygen.

In a compound, there is no bonds between the components. They are there to just fill in space and requirements.

Another way is that when a molecule is formed, the properties of the elements and of the molecule differs in a huge was.

This condition is not necessary in compounds.
