we all know that metallic oxides are always basic in nature..
Sodium is a metal. So sodium hydroxide solution is basic in nature..
We know that bases turn red litmus paper blue..
So using a litmus paper we can test and see for ourselves the result..
You will see that NaOH is a base!

Sodium hydroxide is base.
But to check it out we may try with it a litmus paper. If red litmus turns blue it is basic in nature. And if blue litmus paper does not change its colour then also it is basic in nature
