Coal too burns in air producing carbon dioxide, heat and light. But it does not produce any flame. ... The chemical process in which a substance reacts with oxygen to give off heat is called combustion.

Hey my best friend....
Here is your answer ......
If we burn any combustible substance, it is not important that the combustible substance must produce flame during combustion.
For example, If we burn coal or charcoal it produce heat without any flame.
A flame is produce when an combustible substance vaporised on being heated, hence only that combustible substance produce flame which vaporise on being heated.
Hope it will help you friend...
Thanks my bestiii
