During menstruation, the ova is dead and if by chance fertilization occurs, then pregnancy won't occur. Also, the Uterus lining breaks down so, there is also no place for zygote to be embedded in the Uterus to form foetus.
So, there are very less chances of pregnancy during intercourse in menstruation.
But it's better to intercouse in periods to avoid pregnancy.

WELL SIS PLS EDIT IT THAT THE CHANCES ARE VERY LOW AND IT ISN'T 0% BUT THERE MIGHT BE SOME CASES IN WHICH PREGNANCY COULD OCCUR BUT USUALLY IT IS SAFE TO HAVE INTERCOURSE DURING PERIODS TO AVOID PREGNANCY
