The change in length ∆L is affected by many factors one of among them is the Temperature if we take a metal rod for example we can simply observe that with increase in temperature the stress in the rod increases which increases the length of rod dl times of previous [L] length.
similarly if we decrease the temperature it will decrease the stress in rod and further it will decrease the length of rod dl times of previous L length.
So on increasing or decreasing the temperature we get ∆L [change in length] of rod as:
∆L=L ± dl
