Given,

Initial shapes = 2 squares

To find,

The new shape obtained, after joining the two initial shapes.

Solution,

We can simply solve this mathematical problem by using the following mathematical process.

Let,

The side of initial squares = a unit

According to the diagram,

ABCD is the final shape after joining.

AXYD and BXYC are two inital square segments of the final shape.

As, AXYD and BXYC are initially squares.

AX = XB = BC = CY = YD = AD = a unit

Now, in ABCD shape

AD side = a unit

BC side = a unit

AB side = (AX+XB) = a+a = 2a unit

CD side = (CY+YD) = a+a = 2a unit

Furthermore,

AD and BC are opposite sides.

AB and CD are opposite sides.

The above mentioned two pairs are equal also.

Angles (ABC,BCD,CDA,DAB) = 90° (As, the inital segments are squares, and all internal angles of a square are 90°)

So,

Opposite sides of ABCD are equal and all internal angles are 90°.

This resembles the characteristic of a rectangle.

Hence, the new shape will be a rectangle. (option b)
