Much the same as us, dogs too sleep. They experience rest in three stages:
- NREM during which no eye movement is seen;
- REM in which continuous movement of eye is witnessed;
- SWS (short-wave rest).
It is in the SWS arrange that a dog inhales vigorously while he is sleeping. During such time its belly moves inward and comes outwards when the exhalation process starts. This leads to upward and downward movement of belly in the dog when it is in SWS stage.
