When you through a body upwards, it goes up against gravity. It reaches a maximum height and comes back. If you through a body at an angle of 90° with the horizontal, it takes the same path back if there is no air resistance (no air or wind). If the body is thrown at an angle other than 90°, it undergoes projectile motion (parabolic path). It doesn't retrace the path travelled. Thus, it depends on the angle of projection of the body with the horizontal surface.
