If  plus and minus signs is used to indicate the directions of velocity and acceleration in one dimension, then the object will speed up in the following situation:

(a) Negative velocity and Negative acceleration

  • Case 1: When the direction of initial velocity and direction of acceleration is positive.

    ⇒    v  =  u  +  at

  • Case 2: When the direction of initial velocity and direction of acceleration is negative.

    ⇒   v   =   − u   − a t

  • Therefore, at negative acceleration and negative velocity, the speed of the object will be greater.
