Metal oxide = x gm

Oxygen = y gm

Metal = (x-y) gm

8 gm of oxygen will combine with 8(x-y)/y gm of metal

Equivalent mass of metal = 8(x-y)/y gm

Hey there,

● Answer -
E = 8(x/y-1)

● Explaination -
Let E be equivalent mass of metal and m be no of equivalents reacted with oxygen.

One equivalent of the metal reacts with 1/2 mole oxygen atoms, i.e., 8g of oxygen atoms.
m(E+8) = x g ...(1)

No of equivalents reacted is given by -
m = y/8

Substituting this in eqn (1),
y/8 (E+8) = x
E+8 = 8x/y
E = 8x/y - 8
E = 8(x/y - 1)

Therefore, equivalent weight of metal is 8(x/y-1).

Hope this helps you...
