If work is a scaler quantity, then why it is calculated sometimes give negative value; even though we know that scaler quantity can never be negative?

pls clear my doubt​

let me be clear once again...

work = force * displacement

when the displacement is in the opposite direction to the point where the force is applied we get a negative result..
