now,

x+y=

 \frac{1}{10} +  \frac{ - 3}{8}

 \frac{4 - 15}{40}

 \frac{ - 11}{40}

and,

x-y=

 \frac{1}{10}  -  \frac{ - 3}{8}

 \frac{4 + 15}{40}

 \frac{19}{40}

= 4 - 15 / 40
