Given:

X={1, 3,5} & Y={2, 4}

To Find:

X n Y=?

Solution:

X n Y= phi or { }

What is Intersection of a Set:

Suppose A and B are two sets. The set of all common elements of A and B is called the set A and B. It is denoted by A n B and read as A intersection B.

: . A n B={x| x € A and x€B}

Let's take an example!

Example:

(1) A={1, 3,5,7} B = {2, 3,6,8}

The element 3 is common in set A and B.

: . A n B={3}

Properties of Intersection of sets:

(1) A n B= B n A

(2) If A is a sunset of B then A n B=A

(3) If A n B=B then B is a subset of A

(4) A n B is a subset of A then A n B is a subset of B.

(5) A n A'= phi

(6) A n A =A

(7) A n phi=phi

More Information:

1.Sets:

Collection of well defined objects.

Examples:

(1) Set of all natural numbers.

N={1, 2,3,........}

(2) Set of all even prime numbers.

P={2}

Methods of writing set:

(1) Listing method or roster method:

In this method, we write all the elements of as set in curly bracket. Each of the elements is written only once and seperated by commas. The order of an element is not important but it is necessary to write all the elements of the set.

Example:

A={3, 5,7,9}

(2) Rule method or set builder form:

In this method we do not write the list of elements but write the general element using variable followed by a vertical line or colon and write the property of the variable.

Example:

A={x|x€N, 1<x<10} and read as ' Set A is the set of all x such that x is a natural number between 1 and 10.

Kinds of Sets:

(1) Singleton Set

(2) Empty set or null set

(3) Finite Set

(4) Infinite Set

(5) Super set

(6) Proper set
