x = 1/3 - √8 and y = 1/3 - √8

then,

3x² - 23xy + 3y²

= 3(x²+ y²) - 23xy

= 3{(1/3 +√8)² + (1/3 -√8)²} - 23(1/3+√8)(1/3-√8)

= 3[2{(1/3)²+(√8)²}] - 23{(1/3)²-(√8)²}

= 6(1/9 + 8) - 23(1/9 - 8)

= 6×73/9 - 23(-71/9)

= 438/9 + 1491/9

= 1929/9
