Question: If x+1 is a factor of 2x^3 + ax^2 + 2bx +1 , then find the value of a and b given that 2a - 3b = 4.

Solution :

Snice x+1 is a factor

x=-1 is a zero of polynomial

Substituting x= -1 is the polynomial.

we get

-2 +a -2b +1 =0

hence a -2b = 1

Substituting this relation in the equation

2a - 3b = 4

4b + 2 -3b = 4

b = 2

Substituting b=2 in equation.

a - 2b =1

a=5

PrernaSharma: u have written 2
PrernaSharma: instead of 1
anushkawooz: first one is xcube which gives -2 on putting -1
PrernaSharma: No.. not that one the last one u have written 2 insteaf of 1
anushkawooz: now its correct ig
PrernaSharma: -2 + a -2b +2 here
anushkawooz: check now
PrernaSharma: ya.. now correct.. thanx
