given \:  \: x = 1 -  \sqrt{2}  \\  \frac{1}{x}  =  \frac{1}{1 -  \sqrt{2}}  =  \frac{1  +   \sqrt{2}}{(1 -  \sqrt{2})(1  +   \sqrt{2})}  \\  =  \frac{1  +  \sqrt{2}}{1 - 2}  =  - (1  +   \sqrt{2} ) \\  \\ x  -   \frac{1}{x}  = (1 -  \sqrt{2} )  + (1 +  \sqrt{2} )  = 2
