by squaring both sides

= > (x + 1/x)^2 = (11)^2

= > x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2 * x * 1/x = 121

= > x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2 = 121

= > x^2 + 1/x^2 = 121 - 2

= > x^2 + 1/x^2 = 119.
