Given data in the question are as follows

We have to find the value of a

$(x-\frac{1}{x} )^{2} =x^{2} +a+\frac{1}{x^{2} }$

by simplify  $(x-\frac{1}{x} )^{2} , it get (x^{2} -2 x\times\frac{1}{x} +\frac{1^{2} }{x^{2} } )$

so, $(x^{2} -2 x\times\frac{1}{x} +\frac{1^{2} }{x^{2} } )$$=x^{2} +a+\frac{1}{x^{2} }$

by cancelling $x^{2} , \frac{1}{x^{2} }$  of right side and left side ,we get

$-2x\times\frac{1}{x} =a$

x of numerator and denominator get cancelled, it get

$a=-2$

Therefore, value of a is equal to $-2$
