Given data in the question are as follows

We have to find the value of a

(x-\frac{1}{x} )^{2} =x^{2} +a+\frac{1}{x^{2} }

by simplify  (x-\frac{1}{x} )^{2} , it get (x^{2}  -2 x\times\frac{1}{x} +\frac{1^{2} }{x^{2} } )

so, (x^{2}  -2 x\times\frac{1}{x} +\frac{1^{2} }{x^{2} } )=x^{2} +a+\frac{1}{x^{2} }

by cancelling x^{2} , \frac{1}{x^{2} }  of right side and left side ,we get

-2x\times\frac{1}{x} =a

x of numerator and denominator get cancelled, it get

a=-2

Therefore, value of a is equal to -2
