in this kind of questions just square the RHS and subtract it by two,and that's your answer.

and other is x^4+ 1/x^4
always used this method
its easiest of all.
you can even solve it orally
in my book answer sheet answer is only 7
it has not given ans to both the questions.

X+1/x=3
(x+1/x) ^2=3^2
x^2+1/x^2+2x*1/x=9
x^2+1/x^2=7,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 1)
And again
(x+1/x)^4=3^4
x^4+1/x^4+2x^2*1/x^2=81
x^4+1/x^4=79
X+1/x=3
(x+1/x) ^2=3^2
x^2+1/x^2+2x*1/x=9
x^2+1/x^2=7,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 1)
And again
(x+1/x)^4=3^4
x^4+1/x^4+2x^2*1/x^2=81
x^4+1/x^4=79
