or (x - 1/x)^2 = 4^2

or x^2 - 2*x*1/x + 1/x^2 = 16

or x^2 + 1/x^2 - 2 = 16 [x, 1/x get cancelled out in LHS middle term]

or x square + 1/x square = 16+2 = 18
