Solution:

As it is given,

x +  \frac{1}{x}  = 5

Square both sides,

(x +  \frac{1}{x} ) {}^{2}  = (5) {}^{2}

Apply the formula here

(a+b) ² = a² + 2ab + b²

x {}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{x{}^{2} }  + 2 \times x \times  \frac{1}{x} \:  = 25  \\  \\  \\ here \: a = x \:  \:  \:  \: b =  \frac{1}{x}

While calculating,

There is cancellation of x
