x+1/x=6
Square both sides
(x+1/x)^2=6^2......(1)

Solve by using identities (a+b)^2=a^2+b^2+2ab

(x+1/x)^2=6^2
x^2+1/x^2+2 * x * 1/x =36
x^2+1/x^2+2 =36
x^2+1/x^2=36-2=34
