The question is improper. Please add the proper information to it. If the know the value of x+1/x only we will be able to find the answer. other wise the answer will simply be x = (-x).

Let x + 1/x=y
x^2+1/x^2 + 2=y^2
x^2+1/x^2=y^2 - 2
x^2+1/x^2 - 2 = y^2 - 4
(x - 1/x)^2=y^2 - 4
x - 1/x=+\sqrt{y^2 - 4} or -\sqrt{y^2 - 4}
Note; y\geq 2 or y\leq-2
x^2+1/x^2 + 2=y^2
x^2+1/x^2=y^2 - 2
x^2+1/x^2 - 2 = y^2 - 4
(x - 1/x)^2=y^2 - 4
