x + 1/ x = 5

by squaring both side , we get

( x + 1/x )^2 = ( 5 )^2

x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2(x)(1/x) = 25

x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2 = 25

x^2 + 1 /x^2 = 25 - 2

x^2+ 1/x^2 = 23

Given (x + 1/x) = 5.

On squaring both sides, we get

= > (x + 1/x)^2 = (5)^2

= > x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2 * x * 1/x = 25

= > x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2 = 25

= > x^2 + 1/x^2 = 25 - 2

= > x^2 + 1/x^2 = 23.

Hope it helps!
