Solution

x² + 1/x² = 27

==> x² + 1/x² - 2 = 27 - 2

==> x² + 1/x² - 2 × x × 1/x = 25

==> ( x - 1/x )² = 25 [ Using : a² + b² - 2 ab = ( a - b )² ]

==> (x - 1/x ) = ± 5 [ Taking square root both sides ]

The values are :

either 5 or - 5
