Given,

( x - 2 ) is a factor of x² + 3ax - 2a

To find,

The value of a.

Solution,

If ( x - 2 ) is a factor of x² + 3ax - 2a then x = 2 should satisfy the equation.

x² + 3ax - 2a = 0

Substituting the value of x as 2 we get,

⇒   (2)² + 3a(2) - 2a = 0

⇒   4 + 6a - 2a = 0

⇒   4 + 4a = 0.

4 from Left Hand Side of the equation would shift to Right Hand Side of the equation and its sign would change from + 4 to -4.

⇒   4a = -4

⇒   a = -1

Hence, a = -1 for which  ( x - 2 ) is a factor of x² + 3ax - 2a.
