If x=2+√3 then

find the value of x - 1/x

SOLUTIOn

  • x = 2 + 3
  • 1/x = ?

→ 1/x = 1/2 + √3

Rationalize its denominator

→ 1/x = 1/2 + √3 × 2 - √3/2 - √3

Apply identity :

- = (a + b)(a - b)

→ 1/x = 2 - √3/(2)² - (√3)²

→ 1/x = 2 - √3/4 - 3

→ 1/x = 2 - √3

Now, the value of x - 1/x

→ x - 1/x

→ 2 + √3 - (2 - √3)

→ 2 + √3 - 2 + √3

→ √3 + √3

→ √3(1 + 1)

→ 2√3

Hence, the value of x - 1/x is 23
