Answer: The value of * is 9.

Given:             %x^ = 20          .....................(1)

                       ^x& = 32          .....................(2)

                      %x& = 40          .....................(3)

                       *x& = 72           .....................(4)

Dividing equation(2) by equation(3), we get

                      ^/% = 4/5            .....................(5)

Dividing equation(1) by equation(2), we get

                      %/& = 5/8            .....................(6)

Dividing equation(3) by equation(4), we get

                      %/* = 5/9            .....................(7)

By comparing equation(5), equation(6) and equation(7) we get

                     % = 5

                       ^ = 4

                      & = 8

and                 * = 9  

So, The value of * is 9.
