x = 3 +  2 \sqrt {2}  \\  \\  or \:  \: \frac{1}{x}  =  \frac{1}{3 + 2 \sqrt{2} }  \\  \\  =  \frac{3  -  2 \sqrt{2} }{(3 + 2 \sqrt{2})(3 - 2 \sqrt{2)}  }  \\  \\  =  \frac{3 - 2 \sqrt{2} }{9 - 8} ( (x + y)(x - y) =  {x}^{2}  -  {y}^{2} ) \\  \\  = 3 - 2 \sqrt{2}

Therefore,

x +  \frac{1}{x}  = 3 + 2 \sqrt{2}  + 3 - 2 \sqrt{2}  \\  \\  = 9
