if x =

3 +  \sqrt{8}

then 1/x=

3 -  \sqrt{8}

x square =

17 + 6 \sqrt{8}

1/x square

17  - 6 \sqrt{8}

then x square +1/x square

17 + 6 \sqrt{8}  + 17  -  6 \sqrt{8}  = 34

hence answer is 34
