x=3 is a root of the quadratic equation then it satisfies it

x^2-2kx-6=0
(3)^2-2k (3)-6=0
9-6k-6=0
6k=3
k=1/2

put x=3 in the equation
this becomes,
9-6k=6
-6k=6-9
-6k=-3
-k=-3/-6
-k=1/2
k=-1/2
hope this helps
