If x + √5 = 4 + √5 then x + y = 9

Solution:

Given that,

x + \sqrt{5} = 4 +\sqrt{5}\\\\To\ find: x + y

From given,

x + \sqrt{5} = 4 +\sqrt{5} \\\\subtract\ \sqrt{5}\ from\ both\ sides\ we\ get, \\\\x = 4

Now we have:

x + \sqrt{5} = 4 +\sqrt{y} \\\\Substitute\ x = 4\\\\4 + \sqrt{5} = 4 +\sqrt{y} \\\\\sqrt{y} = \sqrt{5}\\\\Squaring\ on\ both\ sides\\\\y = 5

Now we have:

x + y = 4 + 5 =9

Thus, x + y = 9
