if x=a and y=b is the solution for the equations x-y=2 and x+y=4,then find the value of a and b

x=a
y=b

x-y=2
x+y=4

put a instead of x
and b instead of y

a-b=2
a+b=4

by elimination method

a-b=2 . --(1 eq)
a+b=4 . --(2 eq)
----------
2a=6

a=3

put a=3 on eq 1
3-b=2
-b=-1
b=1

so a=3, b=1
