If x = a and y = b is the solution of the equations x- y = 2 and x + y = 4, then the values of a and b are, respectively * 1 point (a) 3 and 5 (b) 5 and 3 (c) 3 and 1 (d) – 1 and – 3

Solution:-

Given ;

x = a and y = b is statifies x - y = 2 and x + y = 4

So We have

x - y = 2 .....( i )

x + y = 4 ......( ii )

Now put the value x = a and y = b

We get

a - b = 2 ...( i )

a + b = 4 ....( ii )

By using elimination method

We get ,

Add ( i ) + ( ii )

a - b + a + b = 2 + 4

2a = 6

a = 3

Now we have value of ' a '

put the value of a on( i )st eq

We get

a - b = 2

3 - b = 2

- b = 2 - 3

- b = - 1

b = 1

Value of a = 3 and b = 1

option c is correct

Answer:

option (c)

Step-by-step explanation:

GIVEN THAT,

x=a , y=b

x-y=2 (equation 1)

x+y=4(equation 2)

x-y=2

+ x+y=4

______

2x=6

x=6÷2=3

a=3

substitute in eq 1

x-y=2

3-y=2

y=3-2

y=1

b=1
