Since, x, y, a, b are in AP, the common difference between it's consecutive terms will reman same.

That is,

x - a = y - b

divide the equation by a,

(x-a)/a = y/a - b/a

b/a = y/a - (x-a)/a

= (y - x + a)/a

Thus, the value of b/a is (y-x+a)/a
