X+Y=4
X-Y=2
_____
2X=6
_____
X=3
Substitute in X+Y=4,
Therefore,
Y=1=b
X=3=a
So,a,b=3,1

a-b=2 --(i) [ x=a , y=b]

a+b=4 --(ii)

On adding (i) and (ii)

a-b=2

a+b=4

_____

2a=6

a=3

On putting the value of x in (ii)

3+b=4

b=1

Therefore,

the values are a = 3 and y = 1.
