If x = a & y = b, then the equation x - y = 2 changes to a - b = 2 and the equation x + y = 4 changes to a + b = 4.

Add the two equations

(a - b) + (a + b) = 2 + 4

2a = 6

a = 3

Put this value of a on any of the two equations, you will get b = 1
