⇒ x - y = 2

⇒ x = 2 + y           ...( 1 )

⇒ x + y = 4

⇒ 2 + 2y = 4

⇒ 2y = 4 - 2

⇒ 2y = 2

⇒ y = 1

Thus,

        x = 2 + y

           = 2 + 1

           = 3

Hence a = 3 and b = 1
