x + y = 4  ....... (2)

by elimination , addition of both equations

we have,

2x = 6

x = 6/2

x = 3

substitute x = 2 in equation (2)

x + y = 4

2 + y = 4

  y = 4 - 2  = -2

  y = 2

now,

a + 2b = 3 + 2(2)    ( x = 3 and y = 2)

            = 3 + 4

            = 7
