Given :

  • x + y = 5
  • xy = 6

To find : x = ? , y = ?

Solution :

Now, (x - y)² = (x + y)² - 2xy

= 5² - 4 (6)

= 25 - 24

= 1

⇒ x - y = ± 1

We have :

x + y = 5

x - y = ± 1

Adding, we get

2x = 5 ± 1

⇒ x = (5 ± 1)/2

x = 3, 2

On subtraction, we get

2y = 5 ∓ 1

⇒ y = (5 ∓ 1)/2

⇒ y = 2, 3

∴ the required solution is

x = 3, y = 2 ; x = 2 , y = 3
