n(X U Y) = 38

To Find:

n(X ∩ Y)

Calculating:

The formula which we use to find n(X U Y):

n(X U Y) = n(x) + n(Y) - n(X ∩ Y)

Taking n(X ∩ Y) to the other side of the formula we get:

n(X ∩ Y) = n(x) + n(Y) - n(X U Y)

Substituting all the values which we know into this formula we get:

n(X ∩ Y) = 17 + 23 - 38

n(X ∩ Y) = 40 - 38

n(X ∩ Y) = 2

Therefore, n(X ∩ Y) is 2.
