Given : x and y are whole numbers,  equation x/3+y/4=5

To find : number of ordered pairs (x, y) which satisfy the equation

Solution:

x/3+y/4=5

=> 4x  + 3y  = 60

=> 3y = 60 - 4x

=>   3y = 4 (15 - x)

y should be a multiple of  4

15 -x  should be a multiple of  3

y = 0     x  = 15

y= 4       x = 12

y = 8      x =  9

y  = 12    x = 6

y = 16     x = 3

y = 20   x  =  0

( 0 , 20)  , ( 3, 16)  ,   ( 6 , 12)  , ( 9 , 8)  , (12 , 4)  & (15 , 0)

number of ordered pairs (x, y) which satisfy the equation x/3+y/4=5 is  6
